Brentford come out on top against injury struck Luton Town
Brentford took all 3 points in a 3-1 victory against Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, with Maupay, Mee and Baptiste scoring the goals.
Brentford 3
Maupay 49’
Mee 56’
Baptiste 81’
Luton Town 1
Brown 76’
A third visit of the season to West London for the Hatters and Rob Edwards would have hoped it would be a better result compared to the previous two visits, where his side lost to both Chelsea and Fulham, without scoring a single goal.
It was certainly a quick start to the game, with Town captain, Tom Lockyer taking out Maupay within minutes of kick off and then needing to receive medical treatment himself straight after. However, he was deemed fit enough to continue and limped back to the centre of the back three.
Luton struggled to get the ball up the pitch in the opening 20 minutes, with Ogbene and Chong winning a couple of free kicks in midfield, being about the furthest the visitors could get.
30 minutes gone and Brentford almost take the lead. Yarmoliuk thumps a ball towards Thomas Kaminski, but his effort is deflected behind for a corner.
Brentford were heavily in control of the game 40 minutes in, so much so that Kaminski was shown the first yellow card of the game for his attempts at slowing the game down.
Half Time: 0-0
Tom Lockyer went down at the end of the second half and is unable unable continue. Jacob Brown steps in for the Welshman for the final 45.
Three minutes into the second half Luton concede just after the break, yet again. Neal Maupay gets his second Premier League goal of the season. A ball is flicked on by Ben Mee and falls to Maupay, who effortlessly slots the ball away into the bottom left corner and Brentford have a deserved lead.
Eight minutes on and it is 2-0 Brentford. Ben Mee leaps highest from a corner and fires his header past Kaminski, who has no chance of stopping the defenders’ first goal of the season.
Teden Mengi makes a superb block to keep the score at 2-0. But it comes at a great cost. The defender appears to have jarred his knee when making the block and will not be able to continue. This is not what Luton need with Lockyer leaving the field earlier and a massive game against Arsenal coming up on Tuesday night. He is replaced by Giles, who finally gets some minutes under his belt.
Straight after the injury, Luton are back in it. Jacob Brown has 2 in 2. A moment of misfortune from Janelt, who slips on the edge of the area, allowing Jacob Brown to have a clear strike on goal and he makes no mistake with the finish.
As soon as there appeared to be hope, the hope was wiped away. 5 minutes later, Brentford restored their 2 goal advantage through Baptiste, who has his first competitive goal in 3 years. Kaminski pulls off a good save, but the Grenada international is the fastest to react to the loose ball and gains all three points for the hosts.
